Location of Your Garden

Planning your garden is very important and has a large effect on the outcome of your garden.  Here are some items you will need to consider in planning where to locate your garden.

First determine what you want to grow.  Go online and get information about the ideal growth requirements.  Compile these requirements so you can determine how much sun and shade they will require.

Now look at your property and determine where these requirements are best met.  So you now have a basic start for your garden location.

Next determine how you are going to water the garden.  Will you be putting in an irrigation system or using a hose?  Can you easily setup and maintain the water system you have decided to use.  I use a hose.  I need to be sure a hose will reach the garden.  Also be sure it drains well and is not flooded by rain storms during the growing season.

Now use your common sense and determine if you locate the garden there, will you use it?  If it is too far away, will you ever go there?  Will you haul the plants and fertilizer to this site.  Again this is just good common sense.

Now consider any screening requirements you might have.  Screening is preventing others from seeing your garden.  Are you a messy gardener who would not want the neighbors to know?  Will you have a open compost pile and want to hide it?

What about pests such as dogs, deer and rabbits?  Are these a potential problem?  Do you have two legged creatures who might damage or "borrow" from your garden?  Will you be able to fence in the garden to prevent them access?

So plan your garden carefully and it will grow.  Remember these tips work for both vegetable and flower gardens.

Until the next time,
