How to get rid of ants in flower pots

We all have had those moments when we see ants crawling in an out of our flower pots. We may have ignored them for a time but now it seems like they have taken over the flower pot and we need to get rid of them right now. They invade our garden and make it a bit difficult for us to do anything in our own yard.
If you have found ants in your flower pots then here are some ways how to get rid of them totally.
One of the more ‘low tech’ ways of dealing with ants in flower pots is to let the top of the soil dry out before you water again. This will kill the top organisms that attract ants since they are attracted mainly to the moisture in the soil and the organic material that grows atop the soil mixture in the flower pot.
Another way to control ants in flower pot is to stop them getting in the pots altogether. This can be achieved by putting baits around the flower pots and remember to keep them away from where children or your pet can touch it. You can find adequate baits at your local nursery.
One method that has proven to be very effective is the use of ant repellents. What you can do here is to trace where the ants are originating from by follow their trail, and pour the repellent on the ant hill. You can also pour it on the soil in the flower pot, and make sure that you are using one that will not harm the plant. Ant repellents are good for use in gardens, since you can mix some of them with water and cover a very wide area if there are multiple anthills. Another variation of the repellent is to mix water and citrus peel.
You can also try Lemon Tea Tree germicidal oil which possess’ bacteria that is strong enough to repel insects and is well known for its effectiveness against ants. By dispensing up to sixty drops of Lemon Tea Tree oil in water and putting it in a spray bottle you can spray the flower pot itself and wipe the whole surface. Then you can spray the soil and the plant itself. The Lemon Tea Tree is all natural and safe to use. The oil leaves a very pleasing fresh smell and can be used whenever needed.
Another method that can be very effective is the use of baby powder as it is believed that ants do not like this kind of powder. Simply sprinkle the baby powder on the edges of the flower pot, and on the soil. You will soon see the ants in the pot running out. You can also use cinnamon and black pepper to sprinkle about the pot. One popular method is to put diatomaceous earth around the plant’s base.
These tips are all worthy of a try and should work fairly well. If one does not work for you then try another one.
